Shopify structured data: How to get found by AI agents

Shopify structured data

TLDR: AI agents read the same structured data as search engines, so strong SEO on Shopify gets you found. Check three things – schema markup, JSON-LD and complete product feeds. Brands that cut SEO budgets now will have catching up to do. Keep your store fast by skipping headless unless you need it and cutting unused apps.

Shopify structured data is the quickest route to getting your products in front of AI shopping agents. If your store is already marked up properly for search, you’re already halfway there.

That’s the view of Gareth, MD and co-founder of Shopify Premier partner Herd, on our latest episode of Leaders on Shopify. He says that AI agents need the same clean, machine readable product data that search engines do. Brands that have done SEO properly on their Shopify store are ahead of the curve but brands that haven’t are behind.

Why agentic commerce runs on Shopify structured data

Structured data is code that tells machines exactly what’s on a page. For example, product name, price, availability, reviews etc. Search engines have used it for years and now AI agents read it too, because it’s the cleanest way to understand and compare products without guessing.

Agentic commerce is already happening, Shopify is backing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and Gareth expects brands will soon optimize for agents alongside search engines and shoppers.

Imagine a shopper prompting an AI agent: “I need a stapler, I’ll pay this much, and I need it tomorrow.” The agent goes and finds it for you, and in that world, discovery depends less on your website design and more on the quality of your product data.

That could level the playing field for smaller brands – with their data in order, they can compete for those decisions alongside much bigger retailers.

Three Shopify schema markup checks to run now

Gareth’s advice is to get the fundamentals right first. If they’re in place, your products are already easier for agents to discover.

  1. Schema markup on every product page: Use schema.org Product markup so price, availability and reviews are clear, not inferred.
  2. JSON-LD as the format: It keeps structured data separate from your page layout, so theme changes are less likely to break it.
  3. Complete, accurate product feeds: Agents and shopping surfaces pull from feeds. Missing attributes, stale prices or vague titles cost you visibility.

Run your product pages through Google’s Rich Results Test to spot gaps in your markup.

Why cutting SEO hurts your AI search visibility

Brands that have moved SEO spend into paid media over the last few years could now be behind. The brands with solid technical foundations and genuinely useful content are best placed for AI search.

The content shift is small if you’ve put customers first all along. Make it more answer-led, so it directly addresses the questions shoppers and agents ask.

The commercial case is getting stronger too, as Gareth says that paid auctions are getting more expensive. Organic and AI visibility let you own your real estate instead of renting it. AI referral traffic is still small, but it’s growing fast.

Shopify site speed: Skip headless and cut app bloat

Structured data only works on a site that performs. According to Gareth, the claim that Shopify is bad for SEO because of its fixed URL structure isn’t true. Good content and a fast site matter far more.

You probably don’t need headless

A theme built properly for Core Web Vitals and site speed does the job. Gareth’s agency Herd builds very few headless sites and sees them as edge cases. Theme Store themes vary in quality, so check performance before you commit. As you scale, a bespoke theme built with search in mind is the next step.

Question every app before you install it

Each app can slow your store down. Some leave code behind even after you uninstall them. If a feature is core to your business, consider building it bespoke instead of bolting on another app.

Shopify SEO basics are your AI search strategy

You don’t need a separate AI strategy to show up for agents. You need Shopify structured data that’s complete, a fast store and content that answers real questions. Do that, and you’re optimizing for search engines, shoppers and AI agents at once.
