TLDR: Shopify retailers in the US can now buy ads directly inside ChatGPT through a free App Store integration, syncing storefronts and running campaigns within a budget. Shopify is OpenAI’s first ecommerce partner, building on a year of agentic commerce work and similar deals with Google and Microsoft. International expansion starts September 23.
Shopify merchants can now buy ads inside ChatGPT
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads inside Shopify’s App Store. The free integration lets merchants sync their storefronts to ChatGPT, set ad campaigns within a budget, and feature products in marked ads inside the chatbot.
The rollout is US only for now. OpenAI says the app expands to other markets where ChatGPT Ads operates starting September 23, but we’re still waiting on confirmation of whether Canada is included.
Why OpenAI picked Shopify first
Shopify president Harley Finkelstein confirmed Shopify is OpenAI’s first commerce partner. Shopify has spent the past year building merchant capability to sell directly through ChatGPT, and its recent product updates have focused heavily on agentic commerce. The company has also struck similar discoverability partnerships with Google and Microsoft.
The ad integration is the next layer on top of the work that’s already been done.
The market OpenAI is selling into
ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app ever to hit one billion monthly active users this past May, according to Sensor Tower’s June report. That same report found ChatGPT’s market share dipped below 50% for the first time this year, but a billion active users is still a massive advertising surface, and Shopify merchants now have a direct line into it.
What was deployed alongside the ads integration
OpenAI also introduced sponsored agents, which let users start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad in ChatGPT, plus AI powered marketing tools built into ChatGPT Ads. Sponsored agents are in test with select advertisers in the US only, with no date given for wider access.
What merchants need to do next
Many Shopify merchants are already visible in ChatGPT for free, through Shopify’s separate Agentic Storefronts integration, which syndicates product catalogues into ChatGPT without any app install. This new ad product sits on top of that. It buys sponsored placement; it doesn’t create visibility that wasn’t there before. Retailers should check whether they’re already enrolled in Agentic Storefronts before treating ads as their first move into ChatGPT.
How to set up ChatGPT Ads in Shopify
The app handles five functions – connect or create a ChatGPT ad account from Shopify, sync the product catalogue to ChatGPT Ads Manager automatically, create ads from catalogue data, run campaigns using a Shopify pixel and conversion events, and track performance inside Shopify. Products are already integrated through the Shopify Catalog, so merchants can start without building a separate feed.
