Shopify’s new Hydrogen works with any JavaScript framework
What is Shopify Hydrogen? This is Shopify’s toolkit for building custom storefronts in code, for brands that want more design and performance control than a standard Shopify theme gives them. Shopify runs the products, orders and checkout in the background, while developers build the shopping experience on top. Until now, using it meant building your whole store on Shopify’s own framework.
What’s changed? As of 14th October, Hydrogen is a library you drop into the stack you already use, no replatforming required.
It handles the commerce pieces that are easy to get wrong: cart, variants, collection filters, predictive search, Markets pricing, consent-aware analytics, Shop Pay and customer accounts. Your framework keeps routing and rendering, and the design stays yours.
- Starters ready to deploy for React Router and Next.js, plus a Vercel-maintained Next.js storefront
- Host anywhere, including Oxygen (Shopify’s own hosting), which is still free
- 20 built-in skills for coding agents: ask yours to “set up my store with Shopify” and it builds the home, collection, search, product, cart and account pages
- Shopping-agent ready: in WebMCP browsers, agents can search the catalog and update the cart, with checkout after buyer confirmation
- Existing Hydrogen stores keep working, with a migration skill for when you’re ready to move
You can try it: run npx @shopify/hydrogen@latest setup in your project
ChatGPT appears to drop UTM tracking
OpenAI seems to have removed UTM tracking parameters from links in ChatGPT. That means when someone clicks through to your site from ChatGPT, your analytics may no longer recognise where they came from and file them as “direct” visitors instead.
The change was spotted after GPT-6 launched in October. Adobe’s Cedric Huesler looked at around 500 web pages that get a good share of visits from ChatGPT. In one week, visits credited to ChatGPT fell by about 31,000 a day, while “direct” visits to the same pages rose by about 26,000.
In other words, the visitors probably haven’t gone anywhere, they’re just being counted in the wrong place. OpenAI hasn’t said whether the change is deliberate. If your ChatGPT numbers have suddenly dropped, don’t panic. Check whether your direct traffic went up at the same time before deciding ChatGPT has stopped working for you.
Meta adds four new brand advertising options to Facebook and Instagram
Meta has announced four updates for brand advertisers, covering new ad placements, expanded targeting around trending content and a new way to measure video viewing.
Ads Super Burst
Brands can reserve a concentrated 3 to 24-hour window to reach a large audience, with the option of category exclusivity. Advertisers can use Meta’s Reach Planner to estimate cost and reach before booking. Meta says early campaigns saw a median 2.9-point increase in ad recall and reached around 34 million people per campaign. The format is rolling out in phases this month.
First Impression Ads
This placement puts a brand’s ad first in a user’s Facebook Feed when they open the app. It is limited to one advertiser per day and is currently being tested in the US only.
Reels Trending Ads
Ads that appear directly after popular Reels on Facebook and Instagram are expanding. Advertisers can now choose from 15 always-on content topics, including new Home & Garden and Spanish-language categories, as well as seasonal themes linked to holidays and sport. Meta reports campaigns using the format saw a lift of more than 5 percentage points in purchase or action intent and a 5-point increase in unaided brand awareness. Custom audience exclusions are expected later this year.
Aggregated View Time
This measurement tool adds up how long someone spends viewing a brand’s videos across a week, rather than assessing each view separately. Meta’s research found that five seconds of attention built up across several views was linked to 32% higher offline sales than a single five-second view. The tool is in early alpha testing.
What to note: Availability is limited for now. Ads Super Burst is in a phased rollout, First Impression Ads is a US test and Aggregated View Time is in alpha. The performance figures come from Meta’s own studies and early advertiser results, not guaranteed outcomes.
